Automotive technical schools can vary depending on the degree/certification desired, the learning environment (i.e., online, in-class sessions) and the school chosen. Auto tech schools are aimed at those with a passion for cars, engineering, mechanic and hands-on work.

Various degrees are offered in auto tech school, including diplomas, certifications and associate’s degrees. Areas such as automotive mechanics, motorcycle repair and diesel mechanics are available as well as specialized programs geared toward specific models such as Toyota and BMW.

The duration of the program is entirely dependent on the type of program chosen. It is possible to finish in less than a year but some programs/degrees take longer. There are online course available as well as hands-on course work that teaches students everything from the basics to detailed work. Many schools also have automotive labs that give students real-life experience that prepares students for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification, which is required by most employers. Students also have the opportunity to participate in internships or other fieldwork experiences that equip them with the proper skills to enter the workforce.

Coursework and course load depend on the area of interest chosen and the degree or certification pursued; however, all the programs equip students with the basics of auto mechanics. If desired, one can specialize in a particular area, including brake system, electric system or air conditioning/heating. Students oftentimes have the flexibility of taking a few classes, entering the workforce and then returning to school to complete a degree program or enhance their already existing skills.

There are many variables that go into choosing a school and selecting a degree program. A student’s commitment will determine the length of the course work, the experience gained and the chance of getting a job after graduation.
