  1. Always wondered about Japanese woodcuts….water based ink?

  2. wow… that is so beast.

  3. I’ve always wondered about this process, thank you for making this video and sharing your skill.

  4. hey I’m doing some media work for college and i have searched the internet like mad and have not been able to find any advantages and disadvantages of relief printing i was wondering if you could help me or any one could?

  5. The print came out wonderful. I’m a lithographer but I seriously need to go back to relief printing now. I love the subtle look of the Japanese water-based technique.

  6. He pronounced “Hanga to” as if he were saying “Hanga 2″.

  8. Oh, you use the chisel to carve out whatever it is you don’t want colored. For his demo, if he wants those roofs to be red, then he’d carve out everything except the roofs. Some chisels are real tiny that are great for little detail. When you’re done carving you paint on the uncarved areas, plant the paper and press the hell out of it, lol!

It’s time consuming, but it gets fun once you get the swing of it.

  9. this is like lino printing x

  10. very interesting video. I didn’t quite get how the drawing gets cut down per colour but a good watch.

  11. amazing work! 5 stars!

  12. Very nice. Thanks for putting this online — this is what youtube is all about.

  13. um… sory if this sounds like a stupid question, but can you get splinters from woodblock printing? I dont know much about it, and I need some disadvantages of using it for homework.

  14. Yes, it’s like the modern version of woodblock printing, its softer and easier to cut, however, I have yet to see any of the same quality as some Ukiyo-e I have seen.

  15. great video! i cant believe the page isnt secured more than just those kento marks…seems like its gonna move!

  16. So, is wood block printing similar to linoleum printing in the sequence of transferring color by carving out what you don’t want to transfer anymore?

beautiful work! i am currently writing a paper on the Ukiyo-e style of Japanese woodblock printing and this video has shed some amazing light on how its actually done. Cheers!

  18. Cool. A couple NOOB questions tho. I’m assuming this method you do not need to carve out different plates for each colour. Does it take long for the paints/inks to dry before going onto another colour? Is there a specific order in which you apply the colours (ie: lights to darks). What is the best wood/material to use for a beginner?

  19. Amazing work. I’ve done simple block prints but never more than a couple colors.

  20. At an art class we were learning about wood block prints and Mr.Pajak one of our teachers found this on youtube and I was interisted to find it and I found it!

  21. I can’t believe that there are 17 colors in an average print. You did a very good job. Very informative!

  22. Thanks for your kind comments…
At This point in my career I have an interesting happening….

NO TIME TO FINISH THAT WHICH I WANT TO FINISH….

    It is the age thing….

  23. Beautiful. Keeping a tradition alive like this is an act of sacrifice. It is therefore a hero’s act to make the world a place where expression finds this old tradition and says something to us about the world around us, and links us to nature. Great video!

  24. Thank you very much for this video.
I am doing Japan as a topic for my Art GCSE and I’ve been looking at the different points of Japan and after reading the wikipedia for blockprinting I was rather confused on how the process was done but your video helped me out.
    Many Thanks
